Boards & Commissions Application and Appointment Process

Serving on a Village board or commission is an important way for residents to participate in local government and help shape the future of our community. The following outlines the process for applying and being appointed to a Village board or commission.

Step 1: Review Current Commission Vacancies

Residents interested in serving should review the list of vacancies in the list above. If you see a vacancy that matches your interests, please complete the online application.

Step 2: Submit Your Application

Once your online application is submitted:

  • You will receive a confirmation email, typically within a few business days.
  • Your application will be kept on file and carefully reviewed by the Village President.

Please note that the review process may take some time depending on current vacancies, the number of applicants, and the needs of each commission. We appreciate your patience during this process.

Step 3: Interview with the Village President

After reviewing applications, the Village President may contact applicants to schedule an interview. Interviews may be conducted either by phone or in person. The purpose of the interview is to:

  • Discuss the applicant’s interest in serving
  • Review qualifications and experience
  • Ensure the applicant is a good fit for the commission’s responsibilities and needs

Step 4: Recommendation to the Village Board

Following the interview process, the Village President selects an applicant and formally recommends that individual to the Village Board for appointment, subject to Board approval. The recommended applicant’s name will be listed on an upcoming Village Board meeting agenda under Appointments to Commissions.

Step 5: Village Board Review and Vote

At the Village Board meeting:

  • The Village Board will review the recommendation
  • The Board will discuss the appointment
  • The Board will vote on the appointment

Appointments require a majority vote of the Village Board for approval. Once the Village Board has made its decision, the Village President will contact the applicant directly to notify them of the outcome.

Step 6: Oath of Office and Official Appointment

If approved, the applicant must be sworn in before participating in commission meetings. Once sworn in, the individual becomes an official Commissioner for the Village of Villa Park.

Commissioner Responsibilities and Expectations

Meeting Attendance

Commissioners are expected to attend all regularly scheduled commission meetings. Absences may be excused under appropriate circumstances by the Commission Chair or Village President.

Required Training

Newly appointed Commissioners are required to attend a Commissioner Orientation and Training Session. All Commissioners must also attend at least one annual refresher training session to remain informed about their roles, responsibilities, and best practices.

Community Engagement

While not required, Commissioners are strongly encouraged to:

  • Attend the Village’s annual Town Hall event
  • Participate in Village-sponsored events when appropriate
  • Serve as positive representatives of the Village of Villa Park

Important Notes

Commission appointments are made thoughtfully to ensure each commission remains effective, functional, and capable of fulfilling its advisory role to the Village Board. While volunteer interest is valued and appreciated, appointments are based on the needs of each commission, the qualifications of applicants, and the overall effectiveness of the commission structure.
