Fall Colorful Photo Contest Winner

Although the fall season seemed to be pretty short this year, with little windows of snowfall disrupting the bright orange and red hues of the leaves, we received many beautiful submissions into our Fall Colorful photo contest!

The winner of the Fall Colorful contest is Babs Johnsen! She wonderfully captured this full moon over Villa Park on October 24.

Thank you to everyone for capturing the beauty of Villa Park in fall and sharing your photos with us. We are looking forward to many more photo contests in the new year!

Joyful Traditions is Coming to Town!

On Saturday, December 1, from 6-8 p.m., enjoy the annual Joyful Traditions event as it transforms the Illinois Prairie Path and Rugaard Gazebo into a family-friendly holiday wonderland.

This free event will offer visitors professional photos with Santa, build-your-own s'mores and so much more to welcome the happiest season of all. While you can walk along the path to marvel at the trees, lights and decorations, there will also be trolley car rides and horse wagon rides available to take you around.

Stop by the tasting tent to enjoy some tasty snacks and treats , wander through the snowman cave and make sure you don't miss the World's Largest Stocking!

This is the perfect year to start a new holiday tradition for the whole family.
Holiday Tree

Holiday Tree Recycling

The holidays are fast approaching and for those who love to put their presents underneath a real tree, you may be wondering what to do with it after the festivities are over.

Roy Strom Co. will pickup your holiday trees on regular garbage collection days during the second and third weeks of January 2019. You must remove ornaments, lights, wiring and all other decorations. Also, remove plastic bags, strings, wiring that were used to move trees to the curb.

Beyond the third week of January, trees will require special pickup arrangements with the waste hauler.

Snow Shoveling

Snow Shoveling Safety

Say it ain't snow! Although we have yet to reach the month of December, we have already seen quite a few days of snowfall and accumulation, a little earlier than usual. Regardless of your stance on snow, we can expect to see much more of it over the next several months.

But, with great snow comes great responsibility when it comes to shoveling safely. The National Safety Council reminds us that the risk of death from shoveling is real, with thousands of injuries and over 100 deaths each year.

The National Safety Council recommends these tips for safe shoveling:

-Do not shovel after eating or while smoking
-Take it slow and stretch out before you begin
-Shovel only fresh, powdery snow; it's lighter
-Push the snow rather than lifting it
-Lift with your legs, not your back
-Do not work yourself to the point of exhaustion

Be especially wary of shoveling if you have a history of heart disease. As the NSC says, a clear driveway is not worth your life!
