Great Western Trail

Phil Greco of the Odeum

Dedication Ceremony held for Great Western Trail Head Arch

On January 8, the Villa Park Village Board expressed its appreciation to those who generously contributed to the development and construction of The Great Western Trail Head Arch. Each of the honorees received a plaque for their contributions, including Phil Greco from the Odeum Expo Center (shaking hands with Village President Al Bulthuis in photo).

Arched gateway dedication ceremony

The arch itself is dedicated to the Greco Family for their outstanding contributions to Villa Park over the years.

On January 10, to further recognize those who contributed to making this striking new community amenity a reality, a dedication ceremony was held at the trail head arch on Villa Avenue (see photo). The arched gateway marks the beginning of the trail  a former spur of the Chicago Great Western Railway  which extends for 12 miles through DuPage County.

Jan Fiola with arch donors

Leading the effort for this new community landmark was Villa Park Economic Development Director Jan Fiola (on the far right in photo), who further honored the arch donors with lunch at More Brewery following the dedication ceremony.

Please visit our Facebook page for a photo gallery of the various festivities.

Villa Park #8 on list of America's best places to raise a family

This past December, the Village of Villa Park earned the distinction of making Money Magazine's Top 10 Best Places in America to Raise a Family. Factors considered in Villa Park's 8th Place ranking were its quality public education, low crime, kid-friendly activities, and affordability.

Back in September 2017, Money also honored the Village as the 28th best place to live in America. The Village is currently planning a "Celebrate 8 & 28" event in the spring for residents to revel in these honors. Look for more details on the event in future editions of Villa Park e-News.

Moving Forward

The Village is IN MOTION and preparing to build for the future

As the preceding story illustrates, the Village of Villa Park has made great strides in providing outstanding services to our residents and visitors, especially in the area of parks and community recreation.

But there’s still work to do! The Village must continue to build for future generations. After thorough research including site surveys, the completion of Lufkin and Jefferson Pool assessments, and the adoption of a Master Plan — the Village has determined that it would be in the interests of the community to develop a Community Pool &/or Recreation Center.

Moving forward, the Village will schedule and host a series of community-wide meetings aimed at receiving community input and determining what our residents would support developing. Visit for more details on the proposal.

Ice skaters

Ice skating rinks update

While Villa Park experienced above freezing temperatures during the past week, ice skating is expected to return at the Lufkin Park rink late this weekend!

Our diligent Parks & Recreation staff is currently hard at work re-establishing the ice at Lufkin. Watch for the green flag indicating the ice surface is suitable for skating.

Unfortunately, due to the warm weather, conditions at the Jefferson ice rink will not allow for its reopening. Don't forget, before you and your family hit the ice, please review the important safety information on our website.

Holiday Tree/Light Recycling

Christmas tree/holiday light recycling

Holiday tree collection continues during your regular garbage collection day next week (Jan. 15-18). All trees collected will be recycled by Roy Strom Co. instead of being placed in the landfill.

Please remove ornaments, lights, wiring, and any decorations. Also remove plastic bags and any string or wires used to move the trees to the curb. Trees placed on the curb beyond the third week of January will require you to arrange a special pick-up with the waste hauler.

Holiday light removal: Temporary exterior holiday lighting (Christmas lights) must be removed by April 1, 2018 at the very latest. If you do not plan to use them again, don't throw them in the trash, RECYCLE THEM! Visit SCARCE for drop-off locations. Holiday lights may also be dropped off at Villa Park's monthly Electronics Recycling event on Sat, Jan. 20 from 9am-Noon.

Mark Johnson

Willowbrook HS Concert Choir to honor former school leader

On January 27, the Willowbrook Concert Choir will premiere a piece created in memory of former School District 88 Board of Education member Mark Johnson.

Johnson joined the Board of Education in 1999, served as president from 2003 to 2011, and remained on the Board until he passed away in December 2014. His wife, Phyllis, says the honor is fitting "as Johnson participated in music and theatre when he was a student at Willowbrook, and the performing arts were a part of him all his life."

To learn more about this special concert, please visit the District 88 website.

When will my street be plowed?

Should a snow event occur, the Village of Villa Park’s Public Works Department is responsible for snow and ice control on all streets within the corporate limits, except for North Avenue, Roosevelt Road, and Route 83, which are maintained by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The Public Works Department’s snow plowing operations start upon the accumulation of the first two inches of snow. No parking is permitted on arterial streets after two or more inches of snowfall. Violators will be subject to ticketing and towing.

We urge motorists to use caution when navigating secondary streets. All residential streets are within two blocks of main arterial streets, which will be plowed and salted for safe travel.
