Back to School!VILLA PARK – Even if you aren't one of the many students packing up your backpack and heading to class this school year, you should still take note that it's back-to-school time.
The combination of school starting and lingering warm summer weather means plenty of students will be walking and biking to and from school in addition to all those waiting at bus stops. Motorists, be mindful of students and buses on the road.
According to the National Safety Council, teen crashes spike in September as new drivers head back to school and happen more often during hours when school begins and lets out. Back to school dates:
Willowbrook High School: Wednesday, Aug. 17 District 45: Wednesday, Aug. 17 District 48: Monday, Aug. 22

Warning Signs of Heat StrokeSummer may be over in the sense that school is starting up again, but there is still plenty of summer heat. The following information was distributed by FEMA Citizen Corps to share some of the signs and symptoms of heat stroke:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heat stroke occurs when the body is unable to regulate its temperature. The body's temperature rises rapidly, sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down.
While warning signs may vary, symptoms may include: - An extremely high body temperature (above 103 degrees Fahrenheit);
- Red, hot, and dry skin (no sweating);
- Rapid, strong pulse; and
- Dizziness.
According to the CDC, if someone experiences signs of a heat stroke, have someone else call for immediate medical assistance while you begin cooling the person by: - Getting him or her to a shady area; and/or
- Immersing the person in a tub of cool water, placing him or her in a cool shower, or spraying the person with cool water from a garden hose.
Be sure to monitor the person’s body temperature, and continue cooling efforts until the body temperature drops to 101-102 degrees Fahrenheit. If emergency medical personnel are delayed, call the hospital emergency room for further instructions. Don’t give the victim fluids to drink.
To learn more about this and other heat-related illnesses, visit the CDC website. For questions about extreme heat safety, check out the CDC’s list of FAQs.

Help Us See Where We Should Be VILLA PARK – “Help Us See Where We Should Be” is the name of a new Villa Park Fire Department campaign. The goal of this campaign is to have all resident homes and commercial structures in the Village display an address on the front of their buildings that can be easily read from the street.
With the adoption of the 2009 International Fire Code (IFC) – Section 505.1 Address Identification, the Village of Villa Park requires the following:
- All buildings have a number displayed on the front of each structure that is plainly legible and visible from the street or road fronting the property.
- Numbers shall contrast with their background and shall be Arabic numerals i.e. 1 2 3.
- The numbers must be a minimum of 4” in height and at least 1/2” in width. Properly placed and visible 3” Arabic numerals on homes is acceptable.
- Although aesthetically pleasing, numerals in script are very difficult for emergency personnel to read and are not acceptable.
- Unincorporated areas must meet the DuPage County Building Code that requires the numbers be at least 6” in height.
- Residents and business owners are asked to check the size and visibility of their address from the curb both during the daylight and at night. By doing this exercise, homeowners and business owners will know whether or not police and fire units will be able to find their home or business in the event of an emergency.
Firefighters will be surveying the Village in an effort to identify buildings and homes that do not comply with Village code. When firefighters identify a nonconforming address, they will leave a notice at the residence or building informing the homeowner/owner what is required.
Local hardware stores are ready to assist citizens with selecting the proper numerals and advice on affixing them to their homes. For additional information or assistance, please call the Villa Park Fire Department at (630) 833-5350.
If Villa Park residents can “Help Us See Where We Should Be” emergency crews can save time, lives and property in their rescue efforts to keep Villa Park a safe community.
