Cooking oil recycling

Recycle Cooking Oil at Salt Creek Sanitary District

VILLA PARK – Residents can now drop off cooking oil at Salt Creek Sanitary District located at 201 South Route 83 in Villa Park between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Even if hot water is running and the grease is liquid when it goes down the drain, cooking oils and fats solidify as soon as they reach cold pipes. Cities and homeowners spend thousands of dollars on resulting sewer clogs.

Cooking oil dropped off at Salt Creek Sanitary District will be recycled to be used as bio-fuel.

Prescription Drug Take Back Day: April 30

Prescription Drug Take Back Day

VILLA PARK – On April 30, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Villa Park Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 11th opportunity in six years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your pills for disposal to the Villa Park Police Department located at 40 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park, IL (The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches). The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

Villa Park to Flush Watermains in Early May

VILLA PARK – The Village of Villa Park will be performing its semi-annual watermain flushing operation in May. This is a necessary maintenance procedure to clear the mains of rust deposits and to check fire hydrants for proper operation.

Flushing will be performed on May 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Village staff ask residents to refrain from doing laundry during these times, as rust stains could potentially damage clothing.

Staff regret any inconvenience this may cause, and thank residents in advance for their patience. Contact the Public Works Department at (630) 834-8505 with any questions.

Flood Preparedness

With spring weather often comes plenty of rain. The following information distributed in a recent FEMA release includes important flood preparedness information.

Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the United States and can happen anywhere.
Flooding can occur slowly over many days leaving enough time to evacuate in advance or prepare to be home for several days without power, water, or access to roads or services. Or, as in the case of flash flooding, it can happen very quickly with little or no warning and you may need to move quickly to make it to higher ground.
In the event of a flood, America’s PrepareAthon! How to Prepare for a Flood offers the following tips to reduce the risk of damage to your home or business:

  • Elevate critical utilities, such as electrical panels, switches, sockets, wiring, appliances, and heating systems;
  • In areas with repetitive flooding, consider elevating the building;
  • Waterproof basement areas and make sure your sump pump is working; and
  • Move furniture, valuables, and important documents to a safe place.
After a flood, timing is of the essence. Water left in your home for a significant period of time can cause mold, and even in some cases, structural damage. It is important to clean your home as soon as possible following a flood.
Keep in mind that extreme care is necessary when cleaning out your home following a flood. America’s PrepareAthon!’s how-to flood guide also provides recommendations on how to best protect yourself and your property after a flood.

Yard Waste Collection Begins

VILLA PARK – Roy Strom Company began collecting brush and yard waste on a weekly basis as of April 1. This seasonal service operates until Dec. 2 this year. Brush and yard waste are collected on the same day that household garbage and recyclables are picked up.
Brush must be tied into bundles no longer than four feet and no larger than 18 inches in diameter. Bundles may also not weigh more than 50 pounds. No limb more than four inches in diameter will be accepted. Please, use only biodegradable twine or string. Stickers are not needed for disposal of brush bundles.
Residents may dispose of leaves, grass clippings, weeds and shrubbery trimmings by using either 35-gallon trash cans (maximum size) clearly marked “yard waste only” or 30-gallon Kraft paper bags and attaching a $2.50 yard waste sticker.

Notice: on July 1, 2016 yard waste stickers will increase to $2.60.

Disposal stickers may be purchased at grocery and hardware stores throughout Villa Park, as well as at Village Hall, 20 S. Ardmore Ave. Because all yard waste is taken to a composting facility, plastic bags may not be used.
