Flood Preparedness

With spring weather often comes plenty of rain. The following information distributed in a recent FEMA release includes important flood preparedness information.

Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the United States and can happen anywhere.
Flooding can occur slowly over many days leaving enough time to evacuate in advance or prepare to be home for several days without power, water, or access to roads or services. Or, as in the case of flash flooding, it can happen very quickly with little or no warning and you may need to move quickly to make it to higher ground.
In the event of a flood, America’s PrepareAthon! How to Prepare for a Flood offers the following tips to reduce the risk of damage to your home or business:

  • Elevate critical utilities, such as electrical panels, switches, sockets, wiring, appliances, and heating systems;
  • In areas with repetitive flooding, consider elevating the building;
  • Waterproof basement areas and make sure your sump pump is working; and
  • Move furniture, valuables, and important documents to a safe place.
After a flood, timing is of the essence. Water left in your home for a significant period of time can cause mold, and even in some cases, structural damage. It is important to clean your home as soon as possible following a flood.
Keep in mind that extreme care is necessary when cleaning out your home following a flood. America’s PrepareAthon!’s how-to flood guide also provides recommendations on how to best protect yourself and your property after a flood.

Scam Center

The following is an excerpt from a recent AARP article by Joe Kita that provides tips on how to avoid becoming the victim of 12 popular scams:

"According to a survey by True Link Financial, older Americans are criminally defrauded of $12.76 billion annually. This includes identity theft and all those crazy scams you hear about but smugly think will never work on you. Do you consider yourself friendly? Thrifty? Financially sophisticated? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then according to that same survey you are more likely to be defrauded because you may give strangers the benefit of the doubt, are more enticed by bargains and are comfortable moving larger amounts of money around."

ComEd Warns Customers of Scams

ComEd has seen an increase in reports of individuals calling ComEd customers and falsely claiming their electric service will be disconnected unless payment is made. These impersonators instruct customers to buy a prepaid credit card and call back to a different phone number with the personal identification number (PIN) or other personal information. They also use a tactic called “spoofing” to manipulate the Caller ID displayed phone number so that it appears as a ComEd number.

ComEd representatives will never call you to ask you for cash or request that you purchase a prepaid credit card to make a payment on your bill. If you have concerns about the status of your account, call ComEd’s Customer Service line at: 1-800-334-7661 (1-800-EDISON1).

If you believe you have been the target of a phone scam, ComEd urges you to contact the Illinois Attorney General’s office at 1-800-386-5438 (TTY 1-800-964-3013), or visit the Illinois Attorney General's website and click on the “Protecting Consumers” link.
