Pumpkin Smash

After the trick-or-treaters have gone home, we encourage residents to dispose of pumpkins in an environmentally friendly way.

Every year, more than 1 billion pounds of pumpkin get tossed out and left to rot in America’s landfills. Some are thrown away the day after Halloween, contributing to the 30.3 million tons of annual food waste in the U.S. When left to decompose in a landfill, that food waste produces methane gas, a greenhouse gas that’s far more potent than carbon dioxide.

This year, join us at our annual Pumpkin Smash Event on Saturday, November 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Village Hall parking lot and do your part to jump-start the decomposition process!

Free Income-Eligible Energy Kits

The Villa Park Library and the Environmental Concerns Commission are partnering with the UIC Energy Resources Center to distribute free, income-eligible (IE) energy-saving kits that include LED bulbs, an LED nightlight, an advanced power strip, a high-efficiency showerhead, high-efficiency aerators, and educational instructions to help residents make the money-saving improvements. Households that received the kits have saved $76/year on their electric bills. A limited number of kits are available.

To receive a kit, residents must be below the lower 80% of the Area Median Income and must fill out a proof of delivery form when they receive the kit. If interested in receiving a kit, please stop at the first floor Service Desk at the Library.
