Census 2020: Who to Count

If you are filling out the census for your home, you should count everyone who is living there as of April 1, 2020. This includes any friends or family members who are living and sleeping there most of the time.

Please be sure to count roommates, young children, newborns and anyone who is renting a space in your home. These people are often missed in the census. This means they can miss out on resources for themselves and the community over the next 10 years.

Holiday Lights Removal Reminder

Friendly reminder that all Christmas decorations must be removed by April 1 per village code. If you need to recycle old lights, drop them off at the next electronics recycling events on Saturday, March 21 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Public Works Garage.

Train Delay

Report a Blocked Train Crossing

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has announced a new webpage for the public to report blocked rail crossings.

The FRA will use the information collected to gain a more complete picture of where, when, and for how long such obstructions occur, and what impacts result from this. FRA will share the information with stakeholders, using it to help facilitate local solutions to blocked crossing issues.

Polar Plunge

For the third consecutive year, the Villa Park Police Department will participate in the annual polar plunge held February 29, 2020. This event is held to provide athletes with disabilities the opportunity to participate in Special Olympics programs.

Safety Tip: The Fire Hazard of Hoarding

According to Villa Park Fire Chief Rakosnik, many fire departments throughout the country are encountering fires, injuries and deaths as a result of hoarding behavior. The excessive accumulation of material in homes poses a significant threat to the safety of the residents. Many occupants die in fires because exits are blocked or narrowed. Additionally, there is a tremendous threat to fire department operations on the fire scene, as entry points may be blocked and mobility in the structure is challenging.

Family members should stay in touch with their elderly family with frequent visits to their residences. Neighbors should also be cognizant of their neighborhood and report any type of unusual behavior of any kind, including excessive items placed within the yard or parkway and excessive clutter. Neighbors should contact the village with any questions or concerns. One phone call could save someone's life.
