Safety Tip: The Fire Hazard of Hoarding
According to Villa Park Fire Chief Rakosnik, many fire departments throughout the country are encountering fires, injuries and deaths as a result of hoarding behavior. The excessive accumulation of material in homes poses a significant threat to the safety of the residents. Many occupants die in fires because exits are blocked or narrowed. Additionally, there is a tremendous threat to fire department operations on the fire scene, as entry points may be blocked and mobility in the structure is challenging.
Family members should stay in touch with their elderly family with frequent visits to their residences. Neighbors should also be cognizant of their neighborhood and report any type of unusual behavior of any kind, including excessive items placed within the yard or parkway and excessive clutter. Neighbors should contact the village with any questions or concerns. One phone call could save someone's life.
